Acord grew up with a drummer dad who hipped him to bands like Led Zeppelin and Grand Funk Railroad; he met guitarist/vocals Michael Carter an avid Beatles fan in middle school. The duo went on to collect Bradley in high school, an aspiring producer with a studio in his basement and a yen for psych rock. Jazz drummer Lucas Ebeling linked up with the band when everyone found their way to New York in 2022. The band originated in High School when Michael Carter, Jack Bradley, and Zane Acord bonded over a shared love for rock & roll. Over the years they honed their craft, self recording and writing songs influenced by 60’s pioneers such as the Kinks, Grand Funk Railroad, and artists of The Nuggets Compilation. As they progressed in skill and knowledge the band started to envision a career inspired by the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, King Gizzard, and The Black Keys. Our thing.LONG LIVE THE THING.\n\nThe Thing was established in the spring of 2000 when the three musicians met to play several concerts and to record their first CD on Crazy Wisdom, a sub label of Swedish Universal. In 2001 they recorded another CD on the same label as a quartet with Joe McPhee.  (Both CDs went out of print but are available again as a box set on Smalltown Superjazzz (2008).  The trio was a long wanted constellation where several musical styles meet in a very high energetic outlet. All members are influenced by different traditions of free music derived from Germany, England and the US, and these influences are to be felt not necessarily heard.  When the trio started out, the book contained mainly tunes by Don Cherry, hence the group's name. Since Joe McPhee`s participation, the Thing's repertoire has included other free jazz standards by David Murray, Frank Lowe and Norman Howard. Also, the group’s enthusiasm towards rock music is heard when they play \"To Bring You My Love\" by PJ Harvey on the second CD. Today the book has expanded to include tunes by The White Stripes, The Sonics and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. These are just examples to explain how close musical styles are today, how similar the energy is and can be, and how much today’s audience is melted together, devoted to creative music. The Thing is now signed on the Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound.  Mats Gustafsson is today Sweden's and one of Europe's biggest names on the free music scene. Through groups like Gush, AALY trio and Peter Brötzmann`s Chicago Tentet, he has established himself as a very powerful saxophonist, and has somewhat reinvented the way of playing the saxophone.   Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love have become known as Norway`s heaviest rhythm-section. Since their long-time collaboration started in 1992, they have been working together in several groups like School Days with Ken Vandermark, Scorch trio with Raoul Björkenheim, and the Swedish/Norwegian jazz-group Atomic.   The Thing also performs with Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, Otomo Yoshihide and Jim O’Rourke as guests. Power Trio. He is devoted to the performance of new classical music and old jazz, as well as to teaching the next generation of performers and teachers. \n     Ben's recording can be heard as the theme song for Circle Round, a podcast presenting folk tales produced by WBUR Boston.  He has been featured in three episodes (#100, 200, and 289) providing the soundtrack for the entire show. In 2023, Ben accepted an appointment as Leader of the world-famous DUKES of Dixieland, performing six nights every week, in addition to special concerts with symphony orchestras.  In 2022, Ben began serving as the Jazz Coordinator for the Northshore Traditional Music Society, where he leads a monthly jazz jam session in Covington for student, amateur, and professional musicians. In 2022, Ben's bands were featured at the historic Dew Drop Jazz and Social Hall, and at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.\n    In addition to leading his popular traditional-style jazz band, the Redwine Jazz Band, Ben is a Selmer Paris performing artist, a D'Addario performing artist, and a Rovner Ambassador, presenting concerts and master classes internationally. He has recorded for Mapleshade, Naxos, Vin Rouge, Big Kahuna, Antidote Sounds, and AmCam record labels, and composed and performed new music for 1920s era silent films featuring actors Charley Chase and Harry Langdon, released on DVD box sets by All Day Entertainment. All of Ben’s recordings can be found at his website, redwinejazz.com. \n    Ben served as an Assistant Professor at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC from 2012-2016 and was woodwind professor at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from 2017-2019.  In 2014, he retired after 27 years in the US military band system, the majority of time serving as the e-flat clarinet soloist with the US Naval Academy Band in Annapolis, Maryland.  He has been a featured soloist at seven International Clarinet Association ClarinetFests in the U.S. and Europe, and has performed extensively on four continents.  In 2016, he moved to the New Orleans area to pursue performance opportunities in the birthplace of jazz.  Since relocating to Louisiana, he has been a regular performer with the Louisiana Philharmonic and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestras. \n      In 2022, he was honored by being presented the St Tammany Cultural Affairs Council's Lifetime Achievement Award.  In 2023, Ben was appointed as a Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for St Tammany Parish by Parish President Mike Cooper. \n    Ben earned a bachelor of music education degree from the University of Oklahoma, a master of music degree from Louisiana State University, and a doctorate degree at The Catholic University of America, studying clarinet performance with a minor in Latin American music history. Megan Brown (guitar, vocals) Megan Brown, originally from Tepetate, LA, grew up to the sound of Cajun music at her grandparent’s Cajun restaurant. Singing all her life, Megan took to Cajun music and with it the French language at the age of 18. Joining first with her accordionist brother, Briggs Brown, Megan then went on to play with such musicians and groups as Ryan Brunet and Les Malfecteurs, The Pine Leaf Boys, The Lafayette Rhythm Devils, and Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, performing at many cultural events, including Festivals Acadiens et Creoles, Folk Roots Balfa Camp, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, the Shreveport Mudbug Festival, and many more. Kelli Jones-Savoy (fiddle, vocals) The “Jolie Blonde” of the band, Kelli Jones has been playing fiddle since the age of fifteen and started out playing old time music in North Carolina, where she is from. In 2006 she moved to Lafayette, Louisiana to study dance at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and learn Cajun fiddle as well. She has been living there since, soaking up the culture and playing with bands such as the Magnolia Sisters, Double Date (with Joel Savoy, Linzay Young, and Emma Young), her father Carl Jones, and many local wonderful Louisiana musicians, including members of the Pine Leaf Boys, the Red Stick Ramblers, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, and her fellow band mates Drew Simon and Megan Brown.
